What ever happened to…?

|

File this under the “what ever happened to…” category.  Whatever happened to Instyle magazine’s “In Your Bag” webpage.  I mean, it’s still around, but it hasn’t been updated since 2009.  I liked that site.  What is it about knowing what’s in other people’s purses that I find so fascinating?  I couldn’t be that crazy since it was a legitimate website and others must have liked it too (for a time).  The best part were the celebrity bags…

How many “twins” do we have?

|

So, a while ago I posted about how Tom though Daniel Radcliffe was doing his very best Adam impression.  I asked if people did indeed think he looked like Adam.  No one replied.  (I, for the record, did not.  I, also for the record, do not think Adam and Daniel Radcliffe look anything alike.  Maybe when Harry Potter first came out…okay…sure…I saw the resemblence, but definitely not as he – Daniel – got older.)  It makes me wonder, though, how many people out there look like us?  How many “twins” or “look-a-likes” do we have?  Well, I do not know the answer, but I do offer you this: a picture of Jake Gyllenhaal.  Why?  I think he and Adam look a lot alike.  That’s my take.  Agree?  Disagree?  *shrugs*  You probably won’t (cause you didn’t last time), but I put it out there at least.  And yes, I have also updated Adam’s website (for those of you that have requested it…although I am not Adam, so sorry to disappoint on that one).

I plan to get my SnortCP certification. The list of proficiencies is rather intimidating when reading through it, but the sample questions at the bottom give me hope (got all of them right first try). I realize when i write the actual exam, the questions will likely be more difficult, but still. It’s not easy to find cheat-sheets or brain dumps, which, is both good and bad; good because 1) i have to actually learn and 2) less people can get it by memorizing pages of answers, bad because its harder to take a few questions and test what I’ve learned to gauge my readiness for the exam.

I have no pictures of flint to post. Any you would like to see are hidden somewhere on facebook. You’re also free to come take pictures of him yourself =P Also, if anyone would like to have pictures of Rupert on here, they’re free to post them for themselves (within reason! If I look at this site again and I see 100 pictures of cats, I’m probably going to delete them.)

Going to wipe my computer again soon, I think. I want to go back to linux.

My NAS is up and running. Instead of building it myself, I bought a 1TB WD Mybook World Edition. It’s working splendidly so far. I enabled ssh, installed an app manager, and Transmission, so, now, I have a web front end on my network drive to tell it to download my torrents for me. I’m thoroughly impressed with how well it’s working.

Yay for updates!

|

How many of you are sick of seeing the link to this blog on Adam’s MSN and yet he never updates?  Well, enough is enough so I updated.  Yay!  Other then that I don’t have much to say cause I have my own blog to write stuff on so…yeah…all my interesting views on life, etc., are on there…ummm…so….enjoy waiting for Adam to update on his own…which will be like like ten billion trillion years!!!

Back Alive!

|

Finally got around to getting this thing back up and running and what a day to do it on! DNS records updated and all should be happy in a few hrs when the rest of the world’s dns servers know about it too.

Things that happened while server was unplugged:
Went to Halifax – was good fun.. when whale watching… I think they knew I was coming and ran away (yes, ran)
Jumped out of a plane – Also good fun, solo jump, ~3000ft. Would have been more fun with free fall, but Tandem is a different experience, I’m sure. Something about being able to throw yourself at the ground knowing that if you fuck up, you’re probably going die vs having someone who knows what they’re doing strapped to your back.

I’m planning on building a NAS. Going to use a board with an Intel Atom on it to keep the price low, add in 1TB drive to start and likely add a second one later for backups. I’ve only had a hard drive fail on me once, but I lost a lot of data. I was not amused. Once the box and OS are set up, I’ll be writing my own front end to get it all running off of a web interface. I’ll probably be asking people questions when I get stuck, so, be prepared.

edit:

so, I decided to update my server. One of the things that got updated was mysql, which then kindly decided to stop working. After staring at logs showing permissions issues, reinstalling, etc, etc, I put it in apparmor complain mode (aa-complain mysql) and it started working again (it didn’t work earlier in my testing), anyhow… working again!

Up at night

|

It’s 2:15am…I havent been to sleep yet… I was tired all day and now I’m fully awake at night. I blame the week of night shift I just finished working. My alarm is due to go off in less than 3 hours at which point, I’ll likely hit snooze for the following hour and then complain that I’m hungry at work because I missed breakfast. I like having breakfast…too bad I don’t have any bacon…that would be delicious.

Many of the 2 or 3 people who actually check this site know I’ll be moving soon, so, the site will have some down time as i a) relocate the server and b) update the DNS record.

My cat went to the vet on friday. He apparently seemed very healthy, but I was given some worm medicine just in case, which was good, because apparently, he does have worms…
Trying to feed a cat medicine is not a fun task.. He sniffed it and refused to open his mouth; even hissed when i forced his mouth open and brought it near him. So, currently, I mixed the liquid with his food, hopefully this works

Bungee Jump Page

|

I’ve added a page for My bungee jumping. Andrew and Ben both make an appearance on this page.

One issue I’m having with it is getting the video to embed properly. I have them in flv format but It’s not loading. If anyone wants to help, I’ll gladly accept.

From what I’m seeing, there’s two ways, streaming, which requires a media server, and Progressive download, which apparently provides the same basic functionality (or at least for my purpose).

I found some code here. This creates the embeded player, but it does not load the video. (Yes, I did change the file name and add the path)

Again, if anyone wants to help me fix this, I’ll take it, or if anyone knows of a good (free) media server that will work entirely locally, I’ll have a look (If I was okay with posting it elsewhere, I’m sure streaming from YouTube Is more than simple / lots of documentation.)

Also, you may notice that I finally changed the theme…several months after everyone finished complaining about it.

Spam #3

|

I finally got around to activating the anti-spam filter, so, from now on, if you’re offering inexpensive prescriptions (legitimately), it will likely get blocked by the spam filter.

And no, I’m not interested in buying them, so, it’s a wasted effort on your part, but have a nice day anyhow.

Spam Comments

|

(Posted by _._._._._ not cricket)

So, at one point, I remved around 500 spam comments. That was fun. But the last one wasn’t offering replica watches or pills that will make me stay *up* all night. No, this one said that this site was very good and congratulated me on having such useful content on here. This is just blatently wrong. If you find ANYTHING useful on here, I would love to know what…

Congratulation to malware spammer from ukraine who posted that for taking a new approach.
